"Chinese Ideas in the West"

The scientific and technological borrowings from China by the West are fairly well known. So here are a few cultural borrowings I found in "Chinese Ideas in the West" by Derk Bodde, first published in 1948.

  • The oldest version of the Cinderalla story is traced to ninth century Chinese story by Tuan Ch'eng-shih.
  • The civil service system, including its written examinations. According to Bodde, written exams were unknown in European universities before 1702.
  • Tolstoy's doctrine of nonresistance. He particularly admired Lao Tzu.
  • The ever-normal granary. This was a system of storing agricultural products in order to offset future shortages.
