The UCU is calling for a pay rise of either retail price index (RPI) inflation, which was 11.3% in May, plus an extra 2% or 12% - whichever is higher. The UCEA says it has offered increases between 5% and 8% backdated to February but they have so far been rejected. . . . Raj Jethwa, UCEA's chief executive said ahead of Friday's talks: "Despite the financial pressures facing the sector, this pay award is comparable to settlements in the wider economy including the public sector workers pay rises of between 5% and 7%."
